When a permit is needed
Get a Massachusetts special permit before moving a load over legal size or weight. Each permit type has its own route conditions.
Heavy loads
On the Turnpike and MHS, routine permits go up to 99,000 lb with five or more axles. Over 130,000 lb needs detailed engineering review. Neither opens every route.
Super Load
Loads over 130,000 lb are Super Loads: MassDOT needs detailed engineering calculations, and the permit is $300 per single trip.
Irreducible load permit

About the example equipment
The samples use ODPermit’s editable 48 ft flatbed · 5 axles planning profile. Loaded dimensions, gross weight, 100 state miles and Massachusetts registration are example inputs, not a capacity rating or a route approval. Replace them with your actual setup.
