On the Interstate, a tractor-semitrailer with 5+ axles over 73,280 lb may not exceed 80,000 lb gross, including enforcement tolerances, and must meet the bridge formula. On unposted parts of I-89, I-93 and I-95, only vehicles certified under RSA 266:18-d may run the heavier non-Interstate weights.
Weight 149,999 lb: Bridge Design review
NHDOT Permits may auto-issue permits up to 149,999 lb. Applications from 150,000 to 300,000 lb go to NHDOT Bridge Design for review.
Weight 300,000 lb: Independent engineering report

When a permit is needed
Loads over legal size or weight need an annual, supplemental, emergency or single-trip permit, unless a written exception applies. A single-trip permit lasts five business days.
Supermoves
A supermove is over 15′ wide, 110′ long, 13′6″ high or 149,999 lb. It needs engineering and route review, and cannot use an annual permit.

When you can travel
Oversize permits are good from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset and not on weekends, except supermoves and certain building moves on their permitted times. Overweight-only loads at normal speed are not limited by day or time.
2026 Saturday morning moves
Under NHDOT's 2026 seasonal program, permit loads may travel designated routes on Saturdays from ½ hour before sunrise to noon (to 9 a.m. on I-95 from May 30 to Aug. 29). Not on holidays or holiday weekends. Select the Saturday Morning Move option on the load page of the application.
Inclement weather
No permitted move during inclement weather (fog, haze, heavy rain, freezing rain, sleet, ice, snow or wind). If it hits mid-trip, exit at the first location and park until conditions improve. NHDOT posts permit travel status on nhdotpermits.org.
2026 holiday restrictions
Permit travel is restricted on these dates. Veterans Day (Nov 11, 2026), Thanksgiving Day (Nov 26, 2026), Day after Thanksgiving (Nov 27, 2026), Christmas Day (Dec 25, 2026).
2027 Monday holidays

Carry the permit in the vehicle during the move; an electronic copy is accepted. Single-trip permits are valid 5 business days (10 for a round trip by reverse route), counting the start date. Permits are not transferable to other equipment or products.
Who can get a permit
Permits are issued only to the registered owner of the hauling unit doing the move. A vehicle registered outside New Hampshire can't get a permit for a move between two NH points unless it is IRP-registered with New Hampshire on the cab card.
State Police OS/OW checklist
The State Police OS/OW checklist (USDOT number if required, permit number, escort speed, pre-trip inspection, local permissions) is filled out by the driver before driving on NH roads; troopers submit it when they stop an OS/OW load.

Special permits
Manufactured housing, modular buildings, emergency relief, self-propelled equipment, farm exceptions, annual permits and NETC regional permits each have their own conditions. None is a blanket exemption.
