Obtain the applicable irreducible-load permit before entry and move only on its route. Single trips are one-way for five days; multiple trips may last up to one year. Carry a legible paper or electronic permit and attachments.

Example: 14′6″ wide × 13′ high, 75′ overall, 72,000 lb gross, zero overhang or rear projection, ordinary nondivisible freight in daylight. Pilot escort service is required at 14 ft wide and above. NMDOT’s route map and issued permit specify positions and any additional vehicles. Compatible width and length assignments share vehicles.
17′6″-high load example
Example: 9′ wide × 17′6″ high, 75′ overall, 72,000 lb gross, zero overhang or rear projection, ordinary nondivisible freight in daylight. Depending on the road or permit conditions: Below 14 ft wide, NMDOT’s escort map can still require a pilot car on particular roads. Check the assigned itinerary against that map. At 15 ft 6 in high or above, a route survey must check overhead structures, wires, utilities, bridges and overpasses. Depending on the road or permit conditions: Above 16 ft high, the permit may require an escort or a person other than the driver to verify each overhead clearance before the load passes.
