Weight limits
Gross weight alone does not settle it in Michigan. You need gross, axle and group weights, spacing, tires, registration, bridges and the route.
Height & designated-road width
General loaded height is 13′6″. Michigan's T-1 chart distinguishes designated-highway width of 102″ from non-designated-highway width of 96″; named vehicle and load exceptions have separate conditions.
Trailer length & projecting loads
For a tractor-semitrailer, T-1 lists trailer-and-load length of 50′ on non-designated highways and 53′ on designated highways. Overall combination length has no limit when the applicable trailer and route conditions are met. Front projection is limited to 3′; rear projection must remain within the applicable legal length. Rear projection of 4′ or more needs a warning flag by day and a red light by night.
Axle limits: legal and with a permit

Off designated highways, the general limit for vehicle and load is 96″ (8′); the law lists exceptions.

During the spring weight restriction period, MDOT issues no permits over 14′ wide, except in a public emergency.

Over 15′ high is a superload; its Route Survey Certification must state the height-pole setting used to survey the route.
Length 53′: Legal semitrailer
A tractor-semitrailer has no overall length limit: semitrailer up to 53′ on designated highways, 50′ elsewhere.
Length 150′: Superload · turning survey
Over 150′ long is a superload; the route survey must certify the vehicle can make every turn and corner.
Overhang 3′ front: Legal front projection
A load may not extend more than 3′ past the front of the lead vehicle.
Overhang 4′ rear: Red flag and red light
Rear overhang is allowed within legal length; at 4′ or more, show a 12″ red flag by day and a red light or lantern at night.
Weight 80,000 lb: 80,000 lb or less
Vehicles of 80,000 lb or less: 20,000 lb on any single axle and 34,000 lb on a tandem, within the Bridge Formula. Heavier legal combinations use Michigan's per-axle table (see axle limits).
Weight 150,000 lb: Extended permit gross cap
Extended (annual) construction equipment and combined miscellaneous permits: 150,000 lb gross and 24,000 lb per axle.

Superloads
Loads over 16′ wide, 15′ high or 150′ long are superloads. Start the application in MiTRIP, then email the documents to MDOT-Superload-Review@Michigan.gov.

Weekday daylight, limited weekends
Permits allow daylight travel only, Monday–Friday: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Loads up to 10′ wide, 14′ high and 90′ long can request weekend travel, all day Saturday and until 3 p.m. Sunday (not mobile homes). Check before you move
Before moving, check weather, seasonal and frost limits, construction, bridge postings and road-owner conditions.
Mackinac Bridge
Call the Mackinac Bridge Authority at (906) 643-7600 at least 24 hours before arriving: A Mackinac Bridge Authority vehicle escorts the load across. The permit may not be valid on the bridge when wind exceeds 25 mph. Daylight crossings only.
Border bridges
Contact the bridge before crossing: Blue Water Bridge: 810-984-3131, at least 24 hours ahead. International Bridge: 906-635-5255 ext. 0; an International Bridge Administration vehicle escorts the load. Ambassador Bridge: 313-849-5244, at least 24 hours ahead.
Travel hours
Permits are for daylight only, Monday through Friday: half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset. MDOT may set other time limits on the permit.
Weekend travel
Loads up to 10′ wide, 14′ high and 90′ long can move all day Saturday and until 3 p.m. Sunday. Check Select Weekend Travel on the MiTRIP application. Mobile and modular homes are not eligible.
Rush-hour counties
When provision 15 is on the permit, no moves 7–9 a.m. or 3–6 p.m. in Genesee, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Macomb, Muskegon, Oakland, Saginaw, Washtenaw and Wayne counties.
Construction bulletins
Before moving, check MDOT construction bulletins: a move beyond the limits a bulletin sets is invalid under the permit, and MDOT presumes you know about issued bulletins. Bulletin information: MDOT region offices and TSCs, Michigan.gov/MDOT, or 517-373-2121.
Weather and traffic provisions
If these provisions are on the permit: 1 or 20: valid only when favorable driving and traffic conditions prevail. 18: not valid when wind exceeds 25 mph.

Form T-2 and MDOT's conditions set the oversize sign rules. When signs are needed depends on the permit type and the load size.

The samples use ODPermit’s editable 48 ft flatbed · 5 axles planning profile. Loaded dimensions, gross weight, 100 state miles and Michigan registration are example inputs, not a capacity rating or a route approval. Replace them with your actual setup.
